Leave These Behind! 5 Things You Shouldn’t Take With You When You Move!

As a local moving company, at Wildcat Movers we help a lot of people relocate. When planning a move, people often make lists of things they need to remember to take with them, but don’t think about important items they should leave behind. Here are 5 things to remember NOT to pack!

  1. Spare Keys
Often squirreled away under planters, given to friends or family members for safekeeping, or put with the spare car keys, extra house or apartment keys should be given to the new owner (or management). If you’re renting, there may be a fee taken out of your deposit if spare keys are not returned.
  2. Garage Door Openers
You’re so used to having your garage door opener in your car, you may just forget it’s even there! Be considerate; don’t make the new residents of your old place pay to replace the garage door opener. Double check your car on the last trip, or, when you’re getting close to being done inside the house, set the opener on the counter and shut the garage from the inside.
  3. Library Books and Rentals
Before you start packing, make sure to return those old library books you checked out, or they may get thrown in a box with everything else! The same goes for rented movies or tools. It’s much easier to take it back before you move, so you don’t get hounded by collection agencies once you get settled in.
  4. Appliance Manuals
People tend to put appliance manuals together with other important paperwork, such as their lease. You never really think about manuals until you need one; it’s no fun trying to figure out how to turn on the pilot light the first time you want to cook something in the oven, or pressing all the buttons on the microwave when you need to set the clock. As you sort out your files, keep a folder handy for paperwork the next resident might need. When you leave, put it in a place easy to spot, like the kitchen counter.
  5. Borrowed Items
Remember that casserole dish you’ve been meaning to return? So does your neighbor. While you’re packing be sure to separate and return things that you’ve borrowed. Make sure to look through your books and DVDs, as these are the most commonly borrowed items that mysteriously disappear. It also saves you the cost of shipping or replacing something you mistakenly packed.
