Moving Electronics

After packing your plates, antiques, and other glassware, protecting your electronics may be the last thing on your mind due to their bulky nature. However, even the most sturdy-looking electronics have small, fragile parts that can be jarred loose when moving them.

There are a few tips you can follow to ensure that your breakable electronics make it to your new destination safely and securely!

The first thing you can do before you start packing your electronics is to remove their batteries. If you are moving any of your electronics into storage, this is especially important as battery corrosion can cause problems.

Remove any media (DVDs, etc) before packing the items and remove all cords. Leaving the cords in may seem like a time saver, but the metal-on-metal in the port can cause damage to the port, not to mention the chance to bending and ruining the cables that belong to the electronics.

When packing your cords, things can get tricky. Using bread ties to label your cords can save you time when you’re putting the cords back together, and can help you keep track of them once they’re behind your desk!

Possibly the most important thing you can do before you pack electronics is to back up your data. Not only does this protect you in case you drop a box before it is fully packed, but your data will be stored in the case that you ever need to retrieve it in the future.

If you are lucky enough to have the original packaging with the shaped foam pieces to protect your electronics, you can repack them in the box. If not, buy moving boxes big enough to pad the electronics with styrofoam, paper, and packing peanuts. Wrap each piece individually to help stop them from rubbing against each other in the box.
