Moving During the School Year

Some people underestimate how much time and energy you need to complete a major move. After all, you’re packing your whole life into boxes, and transporting it to a whole new place! Then, after that, you have to unpack and decorate! While we won’t pick out your new rug (well, maybe if you ask nicely!), our local moving company makes the process of hauling a lifetime’s worth of stuff a whole lot easier. We know that here in College Station, classes have already begun, but a lot of the moving has just gotten started. Relocating and trying to balance a full schedule of classes is a unique challenge. Here are our five favorite tips for moving during the school year. Don’t worry, you don’t have to take notes!

    1. Check Your Syllabus
Make sure your move isn’t taking place during an important test, or a day when you may have a lab or study group. Not everything is always listed on the regular class schedule, so double check to avoid a stressful situation! You may even save money if you have a weekday with no classes!
    2. Hit the Books
We know sometimes it’s tempting to throw that calculus textbook into a box, even for a little while, but make sure your textbooks, notebooks, laptop or tablet, and any other supplies you may need are readily accessible. You don’t want to panic the first night of your move when you don’t know which box your midterm paper ended up in.
    3. Do a Test Run
Before your move, try to stop by the new neighborhood before your first class. See how long it takes to get to campus, and to your favorite places around town. That way, you know exactly how many times you can hit the snooze button before running to a lecture. In college, being late is never fashionable.
    4. No Parking
Make sure you’re knowledgeable about available parking, both for the move, and to avoid the fees you and your friends would incur if you were to get a ticket. Double check the signs to make sure there aren’t certain days reserved for street sweeping, or hours you may be towed. If you need a parking pass for your car, acquire it before your move-in date. Getting towed is never fun, but in the middle of a move it could be a catastrophe!
    5. Measure Up
If your new place is up a twisting set of stairs, or has a narrow doorway, or other spatial restraints, consider them before hauling that sectional couch all over town. It may be easier to list it on Craigslist, or give it to a friend. Similarly, that tiny loveseat might look inviting in your tiny studio, but when you move it into your new duplex it could be oddly small. Use graph paper to plan out your new space!
