The city handles trash differently from many of its neighbors, so it helps to know the routine before the boxes pile up.
There are no city trash carts. Household trash goes out in bags, usually in the alley, or at the front curb on streets with unpaved alleys, by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Bags heavier than 50 pounds are left behind, so do not overload them while you clear out closets.
Recycling is picked up weekly on one of your trash days. Break down and flatten cardboard, keep it clean and dry, and set it out by 7 a.m.; the city asks that cardboard go in an official blue recycling bag. If you have more boxes than one pickup can take, residents can also use the drop off center at the Westside Pump Station, 101 N. Cottonwood Dr., open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
Items over about 50 pounds, like furniture, mattresses and large appliances, go through the city's free brush and bulky item collection. Request it through the MyRichardson app or online before you set anything out. The city asks households to limit requests to eight a year, and missed holiday pickups are not made up.
If the timing does not work, our junk removal crews can haul away what you are not keeping, on moving day or another day that suits you.

The Dallas County part of Richardson is served by Richardson ISD, a district that covers about 46 square miles of Dallas County.
In the Collin County part of the city, residents pay school taxes to Plano ISD, and Plano ISD schools serve those northern neighborhoods.
