Rain

Moving in a light rain is usually only a mild inconvenience and doesn’t require any special preparation. However, heavy rain is a different story. Cardboard is more durable than you might expect, so items packed in boxes will most likely be fine as long as they’re not left in the rain for a long period of time. But special care should be given to anything that’s not in a box, such as artwork, appliances, or furniture. Artwork should be wrapped carefully in plastic to keep any water from getting under the frame or damaging the art itself. Appliances and furniture should be covered in thick fabric or plastic to prevent water damage, but make sure the wrappings are draped or fastened in such a way that the items can still be carried easily and safely. Any fabric items packed at the last minute, such as clothing or bedding, can be protected in a plastic trash bag – just be sure to label the bag so no one thinks it’s actually trash!

Rain can make surfaces slick and dangerous to walk on, so be sure to point out any potential hazards to your local moving company.  Putting down old towels or blankets can protect carpet and hard floors from water or mud damage. Be sure to watch the skies for lightning, which makes it dangerous to be outside with anything made of metal. If you’re able to have extra towels on hand, do so!

Snow

Snow and ice are unlikely to be problems in Texas this time of year, but stranger things have happened. If there is snow or ice on the ground, make sure sidewalks and driveways are clear and the path between the truck and building is safe to walk on. Put down salt or sand to prevent ice from forming. Snow can harm your belongings just like rain, so follow the tips above to prevent water damage. If you’re able, have hot drinks or a portable heater on hand to give yourself a place to warm up for a few minutes.

Sun

Obviously moving on a sunny day is preferable to moving in bad weather, but there are still some issues to consider when it’s nice out, namely sunburns and dehydration. Be sure your family is prepared with plenty of sunglasses and sunscreen to go around.  Have water on hand and if you get too hot, give yourself a chance to cool-down to keep your moving day moving along.
