Choosing the Right Neighborhood

When you’re moving locally or moving to a new city, picking the right area for you can be a confusing process, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 5 tips for choosing the right neighborhood.

1. Crime Doesn’t Pay
Do your homework and check the statistics for violent crimes and thefts in the areas you’re considering. Many resources can be found online, but if you’re unsure about a particular neighborhood, stop by the local police station to ask any questions you may have.

2. Neighborhood Watch
Somewhere might be the quiet, relaxing home you envisioned by day, but you find out too late that the house down the street throws parties that last well into the night. Visit at different times, so you get a better understanding of the area, before you make a commitment.

3. Educate Yourself
Find out about the school districts you would be moving to, even if you don’t have children. Schools are a reflection of the stability and value of a community.

4. Road Trip

If you have the time, try testing your commute. Don’t limit yourself to your job; take the drive to your friends and family members into
consideration. Make sure to leave at the time you normally would, so you know what traffic is like.

5. Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

The easiest way to get a sense of a new neighborhood is to talk to people who already live there. Don’t be afraid to knock on doors, and ask potential neighbors about any concerns you have.
