Moving can be a hectic process, and when you throw kids into the mix, it’s easy for things to spiral out of control. Here are our top five tips for moving with kids.
1. Get Them Involved
Hold a family meeting so the kids understand the moving process. Mark moving day on the calendar, and remind them as it gets closer to the big day.
Let them help pack overnight bags, with their favorite toys and pajamas. If they’re aware of exactly what’s going on, meltdowns and tantrums are less likely to occur.
2. Start Early
Stuff seems to multiply when you start to pack. Make sure you purchase enough moving supplies so you don’t need to make last-minute trips.
Do a little bit each day. That way, you won’t be forced to try to get everything done in one day with little ones underfoot.
3. Get Help
Hire local movers to do the heavy lifting for you. After all, you’re going to need some energy later, when the kids are settling into the new place.
If possible, get a babysitter for the day of the move, or have one parent take the kids to do something fun. This makes things easier on both you and the kids since seeing all their stuff get loaded onto a truck can be upsetting to a child.
4. Make It Fun
Have the kids help come up with ideas for decorating their new rooms. If finances allow it, let them pick out a special treat to use in the new house, like a toy, nightlight, or bubble bath.Take them to parks in their new neighborhood before you move in. Show them where their new schools or daycare will be. Try to make the move exciting instead of scary.
5. Finish Strong
With so much going on, it’s easy to forget the little things when moving day finally rolls around. Make a checklist so you don’t forget anything.
Pack the kids’ rooms last, so they will be the first boxes to come off the truck, giving you time to set up a familiar space. And treat yourself to your favorite takeout – you deserve it!
